The Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), in collaboration with the National Amil Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) RI, has officially launched the NU Scholarship Program 2025, which offers opportunities for both domestic and international study. Director of NU Scholarship, Muhammad Syauqillah, explained that this program is part of PBNU’s efforts to prepare outstanding cadres who are ready to serve the community and the nation.
“This scholarship program is PBNU’s endeavor to nurture excellent cadres who are prepared to serve the ummah and the nation,” Syauqillah said during the launch event at the PBNU Office in Jakarta, Monday (17/11/2025). He noted that this year’s program continues from previous cycles, where 1,093 beneficiaries across various educational levels successfully pursued studies at NU-affiliated universities, state universities, and campuses in Australia, China, Russia, Morocco, Egypt, and New Zealand.
Syauqillah added that the 2025 scholarship scheme will feature a wider and more diverse selection of programs. “There are approximately 16 program tracks that we will implement together with our institutional partners. God willing, with everyone’s prayers, all programs will run smoothly,” he stated.
Imdadun Rahmat, Deputy II for Distribution and Utilization at BAZNAS RI, said that BAZNAS has allocated funding for this third-year program. He welcomed the collaboration with PBNU, as the scholarship also provides opportunities for international students to continue their studies in Indonesia.
He viewed this initiative as an important step in advancing the global presence of Islam Nusantara or NU’s Wasathiyah (moderate Islam) at the international level.
“This is important—it becomes a gateway for Indonesia’s role, for Indonesian Islam, and for NU’s contribution on the global stage,” he said.
Imdadun hopes the scholarship program will support highly potential individuals and enhance Indonesia’s global image and contribution by utilizing zakat funds as an instrument toward realizing Indonesia Emas 2045.
The launch of the NU Scholarship 2025 responds to the low rate of access to higher education in Indonesia. BPS data from 2022 recorded Indonesia’s Gross Enrollment Rate (GER) for higher education at only 31.16 percent, lagging behind Malaysia at 50 percent and Singapore at 70 percent. This condition encouraged PBNU and BAZNAS RI to offer concrete measures through scholarships aimed at NU cadres, santri, students, lecturers, and high-achieving activists who face financial barriers to education.
